French life documentation for moving to France
Right, so you are determined you are moving to France and starting afresh. Okay, but are there any hindrances to you buying properties in France? What official documents do you need to obtain before you can start your new French life?
Moving to France visa requirements
EU citizens intending to live in France no longer need a work permit or visa for moving to France although they should have a valid passport. After moving to France you then have up to three months to apply for a carte de sejour (residence permit) at the local police station.
Although having a carte is no longer compulsory for EU citizens, it can be useful when obtaining driving licences etc. Many French officials, particularly in rural areas, prefer to see them.
French life can be a struggle against bureaucracy. Having a carte de sejour can speed up the official channels you need to navigate, including when buying properties in France and can be obtained by producing:
- a valid passport
- a birth certificate or marriage certificate
- proof of accommodation
- three passport photographs
- proof you are employed, self-employed, retired or a student
If you are planning on moving to France pernamently then a resident permit will be issued for five years. After that time it can be renewed.
Documentation for buying properties in France
Before buying properties in France you must obtain an INSEE (Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques) number, which you can get from the local tax office. This is an identification number issued to all residents of France and you will not be able to buy properties in France without one.
The INSEE is the French national institute for statistics and economic studies. It carries out research on the French economy and French life and anyone moving to France for a significant period of time must register with them.
Non-EU nationals moving to France
Non EU Nationals are not allowed to take up employment in France without obtaining a work permit before moving to France.
French life healthcare
If you are moving to France you should register with your local Caisse Primaire dAssurance Maladie office. You should also provide them with documents you have in respect of reciprocal healthcare agreements.
If, after moving to France, you are not working or are earning a low income after three months, you can apply to be covered by Couverture Maladie Universelle (universal health cover). This scheme is designed to ensure that everyone is insured for basic medical costs.
Moving to France is a huge step but one, for EU nationals anyway, that has had the pain of applying for a visa taken away. However, you still need to complete some documentation to allow you to buy properties in France and begin your new French life.
