Argeles sur Mer
On the Mediterranean coast, not far from the Spanish border, in the department of the Pyrenees Orientales, Argelès-sur-Mer is a small ‘Catalan´ town of about 10 000 inhabitants in the department of the Pyrenées Orientales. With it´s rich historical past, it is throbbing with it´s legends, art, culture, traditions, festivals, concerts. It is a beautiful town on the Mediterranean coast, not far from the Spanish border, in the department of the Pyrenees Orientales, where the Albères Mountains tumble into the Mediterranean Sea, offering spectacularly beautiful natural scenery. With 7 km of sandy beaches and a 3 km stretch of footpaths leading to small coves, this seaside town is a renowned high-end seaside resort which has been granted the prestigious "Blue Flag award" for the excellent quality of its sea water, its beaches, its beautiful Marina and its exceptionally well protected environment, where the famous Languedoc wines are grown.
Just 20 km from the district capital Perpignan, Argelès-sur-Mer is the only commune in France with two natural forest reserves: the ‘Mas Larrieu´, on the coast and the ‘Massane forest´ in the heart of the Albères Mountains. The resort is easily accessed by motorway, by normal roads, by train as well as by air - Perpignan airport just 25 km away with direct flights to most European cities including Dublin and London.
The community of Argelès-sur-Mer is proud of its exceptional location, its heritage past and the vast natural reserves - the local authority has been very active and dynamic in promoting this town as a high-end French seaside resort in the international community. From a rural village in the beginning of the 20th century, Argelès has developed its tourism and modernised its infrastructure to become the first sea-side resort in the Pyrenees-Orientales and the second in the Languedoc Roussillon. From only about 10 000 full-time residents, it rises to approximately 95.000 residents in the summer season!
Argelès-sur-Mer hosts many cultural activities and conducted tours to discover the historic streets, ramparts and heritage buildings - such as the Musée Casa de les Albères, the historic chateau overlooking the vast expanse of parc Valmy natural reserve, the Notre Dame del Prat cathedral and several other touristic points that give breathtaking panoramic views. Its proximity to Spain and its association with Gerona has lead to the creation of several cultural and entertainment events and festivals.
