The Location
Paris City
Paris is a close-knit and welcoming place with a pleasant climate. The Seine cuts across the city and two woods on either side offer a breath of fresh air. Indeed, Paris has been blessed by nature.
It only takes barely two hours to cross the city on foot... Paris is not a sprawling capital. With a circumference of almost 55 km (including its two woods, Vincennes and Boulogne), it only comes in 113th place amongst municipalities in metropolitan France in terms of surface area. Located on the same latitude as Vancouver, Canada, Paris is in Western Europe.
A city divided into the shape of a snail
Paris is split into twenty unequally proportioned districts (arrondissements) in the shape of a snail. The largest, the 15th, alone covers almost 10% of the total surface area. The smallest, the 2nd, makes up hardly 1% of Paris´ surface area. The city is at 30 metres above sea level. The highest point in Paris is located in the Rue du Télégraphe (20th arrondissement), reaching 148 metres.
A mild climate
Paris has a temperate climate with mild winters and relatively clement summers. Average temperatures vary between 5 °C in winter and 20 °C in summer. July is the hottest month of the year and January the coldest. Spring, from March to May is the driest season. Other seasons get their fair share of rain.
Places to go
* Main sites: Eiffel tower, Tour Montparnasse, Arc de triomphe, Notre-Dame-de-Paris church, Sacre cœur and opera de la bastille... many more
* Canal Saint-Martin which links the Bassin de la Villette to the Seine, is an ideal place for strolling, cycling and roller-skating.
* Bridges: No fewer than 37 bridges cross the Seine in Paris. Read on for all the secrets behind the construction of these living symbols of Paris´ history.
* Place des Vosges: This Square, with its perfect layout, is the first example bearing witness to Henri IV´s interest in town planning and contains about forty brick and stone houses built over arcades. Victor Hugo, Théophile Gautier and Alphonse Daudet resided here.
* Place de la Bastille: This square is, above all, famous for its July column, erected in 1833 by Alavoine to the glory of the citizens who fought in defence of civil liberties. It stands on a crepidoma beneath which lie the remains of more than 500 victims of the revolutions of 1830 and 1848. At its summit stands the Génie de la Liberté (Spirit of Freedom) in gilded bronze, the work of Dumont.
* Parc de Bercy: The wine storerooms that housed the world´s biggest wine and spirit market in the 19th century stood in this park. The wine trade stretched on until the 1950s.
